Possible Problems with a Covered Litter Box
Covered boxes can trap odors in with the cat. Cats are fastidious by nature and may not eliminate in a box that traps them in with the odors.
Out of sight, out of mind. With the contents of the box out of sight, we might forget to clean it as frequently as an uncovered box.
Many cats like to scratch around the box when preparing to eliminate. A covered box does not allow them to do this.
Cats need room to turn around during the elimination process. A covered box does not allow the freedom of movement many cats require.
In multiple cat households a covered box makes it much easier for a cat to be ambushed while attempting to eliminate.
